Aaron's Thoughts
It didn’t dawn on me until this rewatch, but I think this is the first movie that made me fall in love with the art form of film. I have always had an interest in movies & they’ve played an important part in my life from as early as I can remember. However, I wasn’t always utterly obsessed with them or a student of the medium & its history. Some people have that awakening in middle school or high school, but for me I was a late bloomer in college.
I was home on a break and saw this with my mom & it just rocked my world. It was the first time I ever really thought about the way shots were framed, the concept of directorial intent, and the way the themes of the film came together on screen. I thought about it for weeks after seeing it. I don’t think it was until Gerwig’s Little Women adaptation 13 months later that the flame ignited into a fire that couldn’t be controlled, but this movie is 100% the one that lit the spark. And I’ll forever be thankful for that & for the role Cooper’s films have played in my life!
