I’m already on record for how great the ending is, but one choice makes all the difference - the immediate cut to black with no music. Ending the film with the scene it does is one thing, but then to make the audience sit with what they just saw as the credits roll is something else entirely. All you hear are those haunting windshield wipers going back and forth. Back and forth. Black screen for a few seconds and then continued black screen as the credits roll.

You almost are looking for permission to come out of a film when it ends. Either the lights come up or music starts playing. But Baker does none of that here. You are transfixed & can’t help but keep staring at the screen while you sort through what you just saw. Remarkably effective!
