Deliver Me From Nowhere thinks that it’s upending the stereotypes of the genre by focusing on one moment in Bruce’s life. Yet it still finds a way to be as cliche as music biopics get. From the flashbacks to his childhood to seeing a mansion on a hill & then writing “Mansion on a Hill”. It made me feel like I was watching “Walk Hard” all over again.
I love that the film is trying to highlight Bruce’s struggle with depression, but it doesn’t even remotely try to communicate that to us other than a few flashbacks. Which is a bummer for a film intentionally trying to be a character study and not a music movie. May have been better off to just play the hits.
Bruce himself came out after the screening and sang, so extra half star for that!
