Aaron's Thoughts
I obviously wasn’t expecting this to match the magic of the original film, but I was at least hoping it would be decent… With no Fincher and no Eisenberg this shouldn’t have even been attempted.
It has flashes where you can see ideas in the script that could’ve been the foundation of something interesting, but there are so many eye rolling choices made that stand in the way of all that. The black and white flashbacks made me laugh. Sorkin unnecessarily sexualizing Mikey Madison’s character for no reason was so utterly bizarre it made me mad. The framing device was one of the cringiest things I’ve seen in a movie this year. And I think Jeremy Allen White is officially black licorice for me.
But above all, the big flashing problem with the film is that the screenplay thinks this is all a bigger revelation than it really is. Even at the time of this reporting we all weren’t surprised Facebook was doing all of this behind closed doors nor did it change anything about how they operate. I would have been much more interested in a continued character study on Zuckerberg and how he manages and runs this giant company from the inside & wields his power. Heck, even a character study on Haugen herself would have been more fascinating than what we got.
Will Sorkin ever learn that is talent is writing and not directing?
