Aaron's Thoughts
Often times when I sit down to watch a movie that is quite divisive, I have a strong opinion on it one way or another. The Tree of Life is the rare example where I genuinely understand both sides. I can totally see how some call it a masterpiece & others call it a mess.
Ultimately, I think the deep exploration of existentialism & place in the expansive universe works more than it doesn’t. There are times where it feels like Malick wonders off a bit, but the moments of three young boys being boys being raised in the shadow of a flawed/frustrated father does enough to make up for it.
Do I understand it all? Absolutely not, but while watching this I saw images that I have never even thought could be portrayed on screen & felt things that I don’t feel in most films. A true beautiful mess, which very well sums up life itself
