Blue Moon

A Richard Linklater hangout movie for theater nerds feels like a movie specifically made for me.

During the Q&A after the film, Ethan Hawke told a great story about what makes Linklater so special. “We were doing a Q&A for Boyhood & it was right as the movie was becoming successful so they moved it from the little theater at one of these megaplexes to the bigger theater and it actually kicked out Planet of the Apes to play Boyhood. During the Q&A after the film someone asked how I get the stone to skip so many times across the water in the film. And I remember thinking, wow, one day ago there was a Planet of the Apes here & now Rick has got people impressed in stone skipping.”

“And this is what I love about his movies, is just an interest in actual life. It doesn’t need to be hyperbolized. Actual existence is thrilling and miraculous. And our actual conversations. Our actual love affairs. Our actual friendships. Are all revelatory and enough to make cinema out of. He does a weird trick of getting you excited in that.”

It’s not only what Hawke loves about Linklater, but what I love as well. And it should be no surprise that he does it again in Blue Moon!
