Love so much of how this movie is made, specially the retro aesthetic. It just doesn’t feel like it truly knows what it is, which becomes glaringly obvious when the third act rolls around.
The previous films in the franchise gave us juicy supporting characters that helps the audience ignore the that Maxine on her own is a paper thin character. In Maxxxine, the supporting characters are all stereotypes, like they are in X. The problem though is that we only get a few minutes with each one before they are killed off.
Certain sequences are really fun, it’s just never anything more. Felt like a squandered opportunity for what had been teed up.
