Aaron's Thoughts
Always been more of a Little Women guy over all of Austen’s works, but there is something so undeniable about how this adaptation is brought to life on the big screen. The restraint in Emma Thompson’s performance for so much of the film is staggering and then the few moments that flips are absolute dynamite.
Still wild that thanks to this film, Emma Thompson is the only person EVER to win an Oscar for acting and writing (Best Adapted Screenplay for this & then Best Actress for Howard’s End). The even crazier part is that Matt Damon will join her in that elusive club if he wins for The Odyssey this season.
Kind of a fun exercise to think about who else could join that club. Of those currently with one half of the feat complete, Matt Damon feels like the best suited to get the acting win. Don’t think Ben Affleck is going to get an acting Oscar anytime soon. But Kenneth Branagh is a real possibility.
For those that don’t have either award but have the potential to win both - Ethan Hawke, Jesse Eisenberg, Julie Delpy, or Bradley Cooper feel the most likely. Also think there is a chance for Tom Hanks, Rashida Jones, Seth Rogen or Olivia Wilde. Then a small chance for Greta Gerwig, Jordan Peele, or Sarah Polley (though I don’t really see them winning an acting award since they all three seem more focused on writing/directing than actin).
