Aaron's Thoughts
Oddly has a lot in common with Fjord in the way that it intentionally prods and provokes which makes watching the film quite unpleasant at times.
Which is why the turn is so welcomed when it comes (I was contemplating walking out right before it comes). But the film is so insistent on returning to the part that is eye rolling (I think intentionally?) that minimal time is spent on the part that really works & is fascinating to chew on. Some may say that’s the point, but to me it screams that Inaritu thinks the broad swing of the eye rolling satire is supposed to actually be funny.
The result is a film that’s much more interesting to talk about than it is successful. Applaud the swing, but sometimes when you swing, you miss!
